Jarana is a film production company founded in Bogotá in 2022 by Canela Reyes and Sebastián Pinzón.
Through Jarana, we seek to make films that rethink documentary cinema, question its hierarchical and centralist practices, and encourage a multiplicity of individual and collective subjectivities (and hopefully nonhuman ones too).
We want to make films alongside communities and build alliances with audiovisual collectives in different regions of Colombia. We seek ways of creating, producing and distributing work that allow resources, knowledge and profits to be shared, and that foster encounters between different cultures and ways of understanding the world.
Our first feature, La Bonga, was made with the Colectivo de Comunicaciones de Palenque Kuchá Suto. It received the Loridan-Ivens Award for Best First Film at Cinéma du Réel and Best Documentary at Cinélatino Toulouse. Our second feature, Gigante, follows the fall of the legendary Ceiba de la Libertad tree in Huila and the story of a town that slowly sinks and disappears. We also produced Padre, Tierra, a podcast that won Colombia’s Simón Bolívar National Journalism Award in 2023.
Our projects have received support from the Sundance Documentary Fund, Catapult Film Fund, Visions Sud Est, the CNC, Colombia’s Film Development Fund (FDC) and Proimágenes Colombia.
Jarana means gathering, celebration. For us, cinema begins in that encounter between different perspectives, in the possibility of understanding the world through images and sounds we create together. It means having the freedom to search collectively for the many layers of meaning that make up reality, exploring aesthetics and affirming community struggles through a shared memory or idea.
