Lead still from Gigante

Gigante

A rumble wakes Gigante. The great Ceiba de la Libertad has fallen.

Many weep and recall the old prophecy: when the roots supporting its surface died, Gigante would enter a slow and constant sinking.

Strange things begin to happen and the inhabitants document them through their cell phones. They film how they adapt to the inevitable fall. Through archive footage, we discover life around a tree whose roots upheld the imagination of an entire village.

Director's Note

Gigante is the name of a town and a promise of permanence that time and a dying root eventually broke. We filmed alongside the inhabitants as they learned — phone in hand — to document their own sinking. The archive becomes a way of looking without turning away.
